Gravitas Ventures has picked up North American rights to the documentary adventure film, Splice Here: A Projected Odyssey, produced and directed by Australian filmmaker, Rob Murphy. The film will be available on all VOD platforms on June 25, after screening at major world festivals and a theatrical run across Australia and Los Angeles based Laemmle Theatres last year.
The doc is described as a love letter to projected film; the survival of the experience and a deep dive into the world of the unlikely characters who are its gate keepers. Murphy, a longtime projectionist himself, led the team that found, restored and installed the 70mm projector at his home city theatre in Melbourne, Australia for the Ultra Panavision roadshow release of Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight. This prompted a visit from the auteur himself to the Sun Theatre. Tarantino also briefly appears in the film alongside Leonard Maltin and the late Douglas Trumbull, to name just a few.
Murphy says, “Cinema is now deeply entrenched in the culture of nations. The organizations inheriting the mantle of care for past and future film treasures don’t always understand the gravity of this responsibility. Film must be regarded as an art form, and its exhibition given the same consideration. I am humbled that this very personal documentary is being enjoyed not only as an entertaining and emotional adventure – but as an important historic document capturing a pivotal moment in cinemas history. I am grateful to Gravitas for understanding this importance in their efforts to distribute the film across North America.”
Bill Guentzler, Gravitas Ventures Senior Vice President of Acquisitions and Operations said, “Gravitas is excited to be bring Splice Here: A Projected Odyssey to audiences across the US and Canada. Following his journey of film appreciation and acceptance of changing technology, interspersed with interviews and commentary of fellow cinephiles, Rob Murphy creates a love letter to the art of cinema through the medium of film.
The deal was brokered by Guentzler with Executive Producer Glenn Rigberg of Inphenate, and attorney Stuart Rosenthal of Goodman Genow Schenkman Smelkinson & Christopher; both of whom also represent the filmmaker.
